What is product packaging?

Product packaging is the materials used to protect and brand a product before it is purchased and used by a customer. This can include boxes, packaging sleeves, packaging inserts, and so much more.

What is the purpose of product packaging?

Product packaging is used to protect a product from damage or tampering before it reaches the customer’s hands. Additionally, product packaging allows for branding that can connect with and attract new customers. It also creates a space for important information that customers need, like nutrition facts, warnings, and usage instructions.

What is a packaging dieline?

Packaging dielines are outlines of where printed packages will be cut and folded. Dielines are essential for both packaging designers and printers. They ensure that designs line up correctly and are produced as intended. Dielines show how a box looks unfolded. They are used to create custom dies (similar to cookie cutters) that are used to stamp out large quantities of the same package shape. The dieline above is a Greenerprinter template for a crash lock box.

What is a die cut box?

Die cut boxes are boxes that have been made using a die cutting machine. This machine uses a metal die that has been formed into a custom shape to punch out the packaging shape, kind of like a cookie cutter. The die shape will match the shape of the packaging dieline. Once the shape has been cut using the die cutting machine, the box is then folded and secured into its final form. It can now be used to package your product.

Die cut boxes are great because the shape can be fully customized to meet any need. Die cut boxes can have custom cutouts or windows and work great as tincture boxes, promotional boxes, and retail boxes.

What are standard box sizes?

Product boxes come in all different sizes. There are no set standard sizes. You should pick whichever size will best fit your product. A product box needs to be large enough to include the product, inserts to hold the product in place, and any extra items like instructions, manuals, and insert cards. Die cut boxes can be made to match any sized dimensions, so pick the ones that work best for your specific product.

What is flute in a corrugated box?

When discussing corrugated boxes, flute refers to the wavy layer of paper that is sandwiched between two smooth layers. This wavy layer is used to strengthen and reinforce the cardboard, making it harder to dent, bend, and fold. Fluting is measured by the thickness of the paper used to create the fluting. Thicker paper means sturdier fluting. Fluting can also be layered. Boxes can have 1, 2, or 3 layers of fluting that provide even more thickness and rigidity. One layer of fluting is the most flexible for printing and folding.

What is the difference between a pull out box, crash lock box, and flip lid box?

A crash lock box can be set up in a matter of seconds. They are typically shipped flat and can be set up by simply pulling the corners. The bottom panels “crash” together and lock into place. The product can then be easily added and the box sealed.

A flip lid box has a treasure chest like top that swings open to reveal what is inside. Part of the lid flap can be tucked along the inside of the box to keep the lid closed. This box is made from a single piece of cardstock or cardboard.

A pull out box allows for a unique slide out opening experience. The box contents are protected in the inner box with a cover that slides/pulls off. This box is often made from two pieces of cardstock or cardboard, one for the box and one for the cover.

What is a packaging insert?

Packaging inserts are extra things that are added to a product’s packaging to make a better unboxing experience. Some box packaging inserts are added to boxes to provide extra stability and protection. They can keep products from moving around in the box during shipping. These packaging inserts can be printed with exciting designs or additional product information. They can be especially beneficial for e-commerce stores to ensure products arrive in good condition.

What is a packaging insert card?

Packaging insert cards are small slips of paper that are added to product packaging, as another form of packaging inserts. They are revealed when a customer opens the product’s box. Insert cards have infinite uses. Some of the most common are thanking customers for their purchase, offering discounts on future items, and asking for positive reviews online. Insert cards can create a more personal connection between the business and the customer. This makes them especially useful for e-commerce stores.

What is a backer card?

Backer cards, also called backing cards, are a form of packaging for jewelry, pins, and other small products. They provide space for product information and branding that would otherwise not be available on these products. They also create a fun background to display the product on.  Backer cards can keep sets of products together throughout the retail process. Pin backing cards are the perfect packaging for all types of custom pins. Jewelry display cards, necklace cards, and earring cards will keep delicate jewelry secured while showing their beauty off to potential customers.

What is the standard size of a backer card?

Backer cards can be made in any size you need! Most are about the size of a business card. Standard backer cards are 2 x 3 inches. Larger sizes will be needed if your product is especially big or if you want to include multiple products on one card.
