What is a saddle-stitched booklet?
A saddle-stitched booklet is a multipage booklet that is bound with metal staples (stitches). The name saddle-stitching comes from the saddle-shaped tool used to add the staples in the binding process. Saddle stitching is an affordable way to create comic books, programs, and direct mail booklets.
What is perfect binding?
Perfect binding is a type of book binding that uses glue to bind pages together. Glue is applied to a trimmed edge on a stack of pages. A cover is then attached to the spine. The glue is then allowed to cure, creating a strong binding. After the book is bound, the 3 unbound edges are then trimmed to create “perfect” flat book edges. This is why it is called perfect binding. Perfect binding is a great option for magazines, catalogs, and paperback books.
What is PUR binding?
PUR binding is a specific type of perfect binding. PUR stands for “polyurethane reactive adhesive”. It is a specific type of glue that is extremely strong and resistant to extreme temperatures. It is one of the strongest glues that can be used in perfect binding. It is a good choice for booklets that might face extreme temperatures or rougher conditions.
What is Wire-O binding?
Wire-O binding, also known as wire comb, twin loop, or double wire binding, is a binding method using wire to connect pages. Pre-formed pairs of two small wires are pushed through holes drilled in a book’s spine. Each wire pair is bent into a C-shaped comb and then squeezed closed using a wire closer. This creates a strong wire spine. Pages of Wire-O bound books can be rotated 360° or laid flat. This binding style is great for journals, handbooks, and cookbooks.
What is the difference between Wire-O binding and spiral binding?
Both Wire-O and spiral binding are binding methods that use wire to secure pages together. Spiral binding uses a coil of wire that is threaded through holes punched in each page. This means that the wire spirals through each page. Wire-O binding uses pairs of small wires that thread into and out of each hole to create a comb. This comb is pinched shut to bind the book together. Wire-O binding can be easily opened to remove pages for recycling. Both styles are commonly used to create calendars.
How many pages do you need to print a booklet?
For a perfect bound booklet, you must have at least 28 pages and an additional 4 page cover. There is no maximum page number. For a saddle-stitched booklet, you must have at least 8 pages and at most 60 pages. Page counts must be a multiple of 4 or we will need to add in blank pages. There is no set minimum or maximum page count for Wire-O booklets.
How do you number a booklet?
Adding page numbers to a booklet can be tricky. Too often numbers end up in unintended spots or in the spine.
To add page numbers to your booklet, decide which side of the book your first numbered page will start on, right or left. If you choose to start on the right side, add your page number to the outer right edge of the first page. Page numbers are typically in the upper or lower outer corners of pages. Number the next page on the left outer corner. The third page number will go on the right and the pattern continues until you reach the end of your book. The example below shows page numbering starting on the right side with the booklet cover.
The process is the same if you choose to start numbering on the left side page. The first number should be on the left side of the first page, followed by the second number on the right of the second page. The third number will be on the left and the pattern continues until the book is complete.

How many pages can be saddle-stitched together?
Saddle-stitched booklets can have a minimum of 8 pages (including the 4 cover pages) and a maximum of 60 pages (including the 4 cover pages). The page limit is created because the booklet’s staples can only hold so many sheets together. The exact maximum page count depends on the thickness of the paper used for the pages. Books with higher page counts can be created with thin paper stocks. Thick paper stocks require lower page counts.
What is the difference between saddle-stitching and perfect binding?
While both saddle-stitching and perfect binding are binding methods used to create booklets, there are many differences between the two methods. Saddle-stitching uses metal staples to create a thin, discrete spine. Perfect binding uses adhesive glue to create a flat, square spine. Saddle-stitched spines are too thin to be printed on, while perfect bound spines will create plenty of space to add text or decoration. Saddle-stitched binding is better for small, thin books, like activity books, calendars, and comic books, while perfect binding can handle books with larger page counts, like poetry books, children’s books, and zines. Perfect binding typically lasts longer than saddle-stitched binding.
What type of binding do spiral notebooks have?
Spiral notebooks typically use either spiral binding or Wire-O binding. Spiral binding uses a coil of wire or plastic that is threaded through drilled holes in the booklet's spine. Wire-O binding uses a wire comb that is pushed through drilled holes in the booklet's spine and bent into place. Both binding methods allow the notebook’s pages to rotate completely and lay flat. Wire-O binding is slightly easier to remove from the book, making it an easier choice for recycling.
How do you remove Wire-O binding?
It is not difficult to remove the wire from your booklet when you are ready to recycle it. Follow these simple steps:
- Flip the cover 360° to reveal the seam in the wire.
- Place the booklet on the edge of a table and apply pressure to the top with your hand to hold it down.
- Place your thumb over the center of the seam and pull downwards.
Are booklets recyclable?
All booklets printed at Greenerprinter are recyclable. Perfect bound books are completely recyclable, including the adhesive in the binding. Staples in saddle-stitched booklets do not need to be taken out before recycling. However, Wire-O binding should be removed and thrown out before putting the remaining paper pages into the recycling bin.
