What is die cutting?

Modified on Wed, 14 Feb, 2024 at 10:23 AM

At Greenerprinter, we use die cutting to create custom-shaped products with beautiful, clean edges. Die cutting uses a custom-shaped blade, called a die, to stamp out the shape, similar to a cookie cutter. Die cutting can be done on paper, cardboard, sticker paper, and many other materials. Once a die is created, it can be used to cut out the same shape over and over again. Die cutting is often used for hang tags, packaging, business cards, and other items with unique shapes. Stickers use custom dies to make both kiss cut sheets or as cut-out shapes.

What are the benefits of die cutting?

  • Crisp, clean edges

  • Very cost effective once the initial die is created
  • Can cut through a wide variety of materials

What are the drawbacks of die cutting?

  • May struggle with extremely thick materials
  • Creating dies may be expensive
  • Adds to turnaround time
