Vector Graphics vs. Raster Images

What are Vector Graphics?

Vector graphics are digital images created with mathematical equations and geometric calculations. Computer programs use these equations to calculate the shape of each element in your vector design. This allows the image to be scaled up or down endlessly with no changes to resolution or image quality. Vector files are perfect for illustrations and logos.

Pros

  • Easy to scale up and down
  • Not dependent on resolution
  • Easy to edit

Cons

  • Small design mistakes can be very obvious at large sizes
  • Hard to get as detailed as photos

What are Raster Images?

Raster graphics are digital images created by colored pixel grids. Each image has a set number of pixels. Each pixel is one color. When viewed from a distance these pixels blur together to create the image. Raster images will become lower resolution and lower quality when they are scaled up. Pixels will become visible and the image will appear blurry if the image is enlarged enough. Raster files are perfect for detailed photos.

Pros

  • Can accurately show detailed photos and images
  • Precise editing can be done pixel by pixel

Cons

  • Loses quality when scaling up
  • File sizes can be very large

When Should I Use Vector Graphics?

Vector files should be used for logos, illustrations, branding information that needs to be frequently resized, graphics for large format printing (like posters and banners), and simple graphics. Vector graphics are not affected by resolution, so any vector graphic is considered print-ready. Vectors will print well on all products, including packaging, booklets, and brochures.

When Should I Use Raster Images?

Raster files should be used for photographs, detailed images, or intricate graphics. They are common as images on flyers, lookbooks, newsletters, and other products involving photography. When submitting your print-ready files, all raster images must be at least 300ppi.
