What is a safety margin?

Modified on Thu, 15 Feb, 2024 at 10:54 AM

A safety margin is a small area around the edge of your design that should not include any important information or text. This safe area acts as a buffer between important info and the trimming line. It is required on all printed products, including business cards and hang tags.

Sometimes printed products are not trimmed precisely on the line due to unavoidable shifts in the trimming process. The safe area ensures that even if this happens, no important info is lost. A safety margin is used in addition to bleed.

How big should my safety margin be?

The size of your safety margin depends on your project. The shape, size, and paper used to produce your product all affect how much space you should leave around the edge of your design. Typically, safety margins should be at least 0.125”, but more is often required on larger products like posters and signage, and complicated shapes like boxes.
